What you should know about Croft Wines
Nick established the Pirinoa vineyard and was our manager until retirement in 2006. Peter retired from his city role as a Managing Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2002 to concentrate on the vineyard full time. As the vineyard increases its production, Peter’s main task will be in the sales and marketing area. Excellence can be obtained if you care more than others think is wise risk more than others think is safe dream more than others think is practical expect more than others think is possible.
Croft Wines was established in 199 on 25 acres of the gravely soils of the Martinborough Terraces. We started out with the goal of developing a quality vineyard as good as any in Martinborough. Even from the earliest days we knew we had the formula right award winning Martinborough Vineyard purchased most of our crops
An initial planting of Minot Nair was quickly followed by Chardonnay, Minot Gris and Sauvignon Blanca, all varieties produced by the winery today. As a vintage test, we decided to exit only a scanty bunches on the vines, harvesting some 74 kilos of CD 5 Minot Nair grapes in April.
With family and friends we had a leisurely and all the fruit was in the winery by 11. The resulting wine is elegant with good length on the palate and fine structure. The wine highlights characters of citrus lime and pear, together with mineral and flint notes. The result was that the vines suffered bud ruin and produced a smaller than anticipated crop of 8. The fermented must was transferred to French oak 33 new and allowed to rest for 11 months earlier to bottling. After a taste test revealed the wine was in huge condition, we negotiated the buy of both barrels and soon thereafter bottled, labeled, boxed, rested and, finally, released the vintage.
This was our first ever vintage when all the grapes were harvested on the agreed dates. The 2005 vintage was to be the beginning released as Croft Wine, with Minot Nair, Minot Gris, Sauvignon Blanca and unbaked Chardonnay. The resulting wine is extravagant with appropriate length on the palate and pleasing structure. The wine highlights characters of citrus lime and pear, together with mineral and flint notes.
The barrels were lees stirred twice a month for five months and then once a month for the remaining six months. The weather this year was why the premature Martin borough Wine Pioneers came here. An ongoing potential risk in Martin borough, hasty autumn frosts can damage the first buds of the season from which the maximum quality fruit develops. We will report on progress and it will be interesting to see whether this wine will finally be appropriate ample for the CROFT label
